Foothills Youth Theater is a theater education and performance company for young people in Athens County and the surrounding areas. Out activities are most appropriate for all children ages 9- 15, although sometimes we do have roles available for children younger than 9 as well as adults.
Foothills Youth Theater was founded by Christina Deidesheimer, who previously ran Studio for Young Actors in Athens, Ohio. Studio for young Actors was a youth education and performance company that ran from 2000- 2010. Originally called The Drama Club, SYA performed many plays all over Athens, at places like Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville, the old Athens Community Center (remember the airplane hangar?), Albany Cornerstone, Athens Middle School and others before finally settling on their final home at ARTS/West in Athens. Christina holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater/Acting from Ohio University and a Master of Science in Integrated Marketing Communications from West Virginia University. She has over 30 years’ experience in theater.
Some of the shows performed by Studio for Young Actors included: the Broadway musical Annie, The Snow Queen, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, A Christmas Carol, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Little Women, Still Life with Iris and many, many others. Studio for Young Actors was honored to witness the talents of many Athenian boys and girls who are now successful young men and women of whom Christina is exceedingly proud.
Christina moved away from Athens in 2010 and Studio for Young Actors took a six-year hiatus. She recently moved back to Athens with her family and reignited the idea of youth theater for young people, this time with a new name. Christina is very pleased to see that in her absence, many long-standing theater companies have remained in existence and some new ones have started. She is even more pleased that some of these companies offer roles for young performers.
Not wishing to compete with existing artistic outlets, Foothills Youth Theater exists as yet another avenue for young people in Athens County and surrounding areas to hone their skills and grow their talents. Further, Foothills considers itself a collaborative company. We will endeavor to work within and outside the performing arts to create meaningful educational and performance opportunities for our participants and our audiences.
Educational and performance opportunities in Foothills Youth Theater are 99.9% youth-oriented, meaning the young people are the stars. We hope to see you at an upcoming workshop or performance.
Foothills Youth Theater is an inclusive youth theater. We do not discriminate on any basis, and do not tolerate discrimination within our organization.
